Steam Engine Simulator

Steam Engine Simulator is a build-it-yourself physics game about how a steam engine actually works. Not as a diagram to memorize, but as a machine you assemble, stoke and drive yourself, piece by piece, across twenty-six levels.
You start with nothing
Just a riveted iron boiler and a coal fire. Stoke it, watch the needle climb, and pop the safety valve on purpose so you find out why it exists. Then comes the cylinder, where for a while you are the valve: admitting steam by hand, feeling pressure become force. Add the crank and flywheel and that shove turns into rotation, and you meet dead centerthe hard way, when the engine parks itself exactly where steam has no leverage and you have to bar the flywheel over by hand to free it. By the time an eccentric-driven slide valve takes over the job your fingers were doing, you understand exactly what it is automating.
The whole history of steam
From there the campaign walks it one working machine at a time: Hero's spinning aeolipile from 50 AD; Newcomen's great rocking beam, pumping mines by the weight of the atmosphere itself; Watt's separate condenser; the flyball governor, the first machine that taught itself to hold a speed; Stephenson's Rocket racing to thirty miles an hour on the draught of its own exhaust; and compound engines that use the same steam twice.
Honest machinery, not animation
Every mechanism runs on a genuine rigid-body simulation rather than animation, so the behaviour is emergent and honest. Engines stall. Boilers sag under load. Governors droop. A stalled engine banks up pressure that makes it leap when you finally free it.
A live cutaway shows steam threading through the valve chest and ports as it happens, and historical notes on each level tell you who thought of it and when. And once you have met a goal, you can wave the completion card away and simply keep playing with the machine you built.
